As a drummer and performer, Ben has more than 23 years’ experience playing with diverse musical groups. He has performed with bands such as Black Giraffe, Little Fixtures, and Tobias the Owl, and toured nationally with artists such as Ayron Jones and Jake Bradley.
Ben taught at the Seattle Drum School of Music (SDS) for over a decade. While at SDS, he focused on technique, chart reading, biomechanics/ergonomics, and the psychology of performance. He also taught audio recording, ensemble classes, and piano. His students have ranged in age from four to eighty, and in experience from beginner to professional.
Ben’s students have been featured on radio stations such as KEXP, received scholarships to and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from institutions such as Berklee College of Music and San Francisco Conservatory, and toured nationally.
Some students have had challenges such as ADHD, Autism, Anxiety, or Depression. Because of his considerable experience working with neurodiverse populations, Ben brings a compassionate and sympathetic approach to teaching. Learning to manage the emotional side of performance and teamwork is as important as learning musical vocabulary and facility.
“Students are unique, and as a private teacher, I get to tailor curriculum to their individual needs.”
